Happy Belated Halloween

The French do not celebrate Halloween like Americans. From what I was told, it's only become somewhat popular in the last few years. Some kids go trick or treating, but many households do not have candy available.

On Friday night, I only saw a handful of people dressed in costumes. Pic above is a Couch Surfer who lives in Montpellier.

Bérengère and I.

On Friday was the Montpellier Couch Surfers meet up. In many cities around the world, there are meet ups with local Couch Surfers. Everyone in the pic lives in Montpellier with the exception of myself and the tall dude in back.

In Amsterdam, they have meet ups every Friday. In Chicago, they've only had two meet ups thus far.

We started the night at a wine bar and then went to a club where we danced until 4 am. It was a lot of fun.

MYTHS PEOPLE HAVE TOLD ME:

1. MYTH: They (Europeans) dislike us (Americans), and therefore, it's unsafe to travel Europe.

TRUTH: Not true. There's a misconception that since 9/11 Europeans dislikes us. Most dislike the current administration and its foreign policy, and they (as I) find it hard to believe that we elected Bush for a second term, but overall we're still liked.

2. MYTH: It's not safe for a woman to travel solo in Europe.

TRUTH: Yes, it is. It's the same as traveling in the US. Read Rick Steves' opinion at http://www.ricksteves.com/plan/tips/women_solo.htm

3. MYTH: I must be rich.

TRUTH: No, I'm not. I have choosen to spend my money on other things besides a fancy car, condo, etc. So, don't be hatin'.

MY BACKPACK (THANKS TO SAM DEWEESE) INCLUDES:

2 pants
4 tops
1 skirt
1 black dress
1 t-shirt
1 tank
2 short
1 long sleeve shirt
2 hoodies/pullovers
1 pajama pant
1 towel
1 travel pillow

sleeping pills, benedryl, advil, toiletries, feminine products, flashlight, ipod, swiss army knife, mace, batteries, protein bars, handiwipes, wine bottle opener, detergent, pens, journal, travel pillow.

Every guide book or experienced backpacker will tell you to pack light. This was difficult because I will need "farm clothes" and normal clothes. But then again, it was pretty easy considering I'm all about redos (an outfit you wear two days in a row). Just ask my friend Debbles.

About Me

My photo
Brooke Sylvester
To quit my job and travel Europe to many is unusual and a bold move to make. Yes, I agree. There were many nights I was full of anxiety and thinking to myself, "What the f*** am I doing?!" But it's something I needed to do. To put it simply, I wasn't satisfied with my life and I've always wanted to backpack through Europe. At any time in my life, this was the time to do it. Some joke I'm going through my midlife crisis at 29. It's possible! So I quit my job (last day July 16), moved out of my apartment and got rid of my belongings, ie, couch, bed, furniture, and shipped the rest to my mom's. It's a scary decision to quit your job, especially during a not-so-hot economy. Some people have told me I should build my career while I'm young and I'll have trouble finding a job. Of course, I have worried what I'll do when I return. Not to sound arrogant, but everytime I've looked for a job it's been during a bad economy. I believe I'll be fine. If anything I can be a 29-year-old loser who bums off her mom! In all seriousness, I came to the conclusion that I can't be afraid to take chances and live. And I'm only 29, I have the rest of my life to work.
